Update on Railway Quay Works

For your information, the following local Notice to Mariners (No.15/2012) has just been published.

"With reference to Notice to Mariners No.12/2012, Mariners are hereby advised that works will now commence on Monday 23rd July 2012 to demolish the old timber quayside of the Railway Quay from the Swingbridge to No.2 RoRo Berth and to install new starboard hand navigational marks along the existing sheet piling wall. (From approximate positions 50 47.42N, 000 03.26E to 50 47.68N, 000 03.18E). The Gridiron situated just south of the Marine Workshops will also be demolished.

The works are expected to take approximately 3 months to complete.

The demolition works will all be carried out from the eastern river bank using land based mobile plant. A boom will be placed around the working area to prevent any floating debris causing a danger to navigation and a safety boat will be in attendance at all times.

The piling works for the beacons is expected to commence on Monday 30th July and will be carried out by the floating crane barge “Doubler” with attendant vessels “Runner” and “Buccaneer”.

It is expected that the navigational channel will be kept free for marine traffic at all times but Mariners are requested to pass the area at the minimum speed possible, keep a good lookout for any debris that may escape the boomed area and keep a VHF watch on channel 12 at all times. Please report any problems encountered to Newhaven Port Control as below and follow all instructions given by the attendant vessels and by Port Control..

The navigational lights (Fl.G.5s) that were situated on the quayside at the northern and southern extremities of the gridiron have been permanently removed and discontinued. Once the new navigational marks have been installed, another Notice to Mariners will be issued with their positions.

Mariners encountering any problems or requiring further information should contact Newhaven Port Control, Call sign “ Newhaven Radio” – VHF Channel 12, or by telephone on 01273 612926."

Railway Quay Demolition Works

Long overdue works will commence on or about Monday 11th June 2012 to demolish the old decaying timber structure of Railway Quay, from the Swingbridge running south to No. 2 RoRo Berth.

These works have been planned for the last two years, but have suffered delay after delay and NPP are extremely pleased to be able to start work at last. The ownership of Railway Quay is split between NPP (south end) and West Register, a subsidiary company of the Royal Bank of Scotland, (north end). These works are a joint project.

All the demolition works will be carried out from the eastern river bank and working hours are 0730hrs to 1730hrs Monday to Friday. However, due to the tidal nature of the works, these working times may exceptionally be extended. The whole job is expected to take approximately 4 months.

Once all the old timber work has been removed, the exposed river bank will be cleared of all debris and navigational beacons will be installed along the retaining sheet piling wall.

Disturbance will be kept to the minimum necessary to carry out the works and we would appreciate the patience and support of the public, particularly the West Quay residents living opposite the site, whilst the present eye-sore is at last tidied up.

It was of course hoped to further these works by constructing a new public boardwalk along the Railway Quay, along with new ferry terminal buildings, refurbished Marine Workshops and a new superstore, which would have really improved the visual impact of the town and created significant much needed regeneration. However, the Planning Committee recently rejected this proposal in favour of the Eastside Development.

Newhaven Port & Properties will continue to seek ways to regenerate this area in line with the Port Masterplan and for the mutual benefit of the Port and the Town.

West Quay Users (Fishing) Group meeting

The 6 monthly meeting of the West Quay Users (Fishing) Group was held on Thursday 10th May 2012 at Newhaven Lifeboat Station.
The group is a sub-group of the main Port User Group and meets to discuss issues important to the Newhaven Fishermen and allows the Port Authority to bring the members up to date with Port news and the latest Safety matters.
The meeting was well attended and the Chairman, Harbour Master Dave Collins-Williams, had also invited representitives of the Sussex Inshore Fisheries & Conservation Authority and the Maritime & Coastguard Agency to update the members on the latest relevant hot topics.
Thanks go to Newhaven RNLI for once again hosting the event and showing that Newhaven's Maritime community are working together for the benefit of all harbour users.
