PATCH Events January 2011

Newhaven Port Authority and East Sussex County Council jointly attended the London Boat Show on Saturday 15th January 2011 to promote the Port and the County within the leisure and boatbuilding world. The Port's Consultants Royal Haskoning were also present to assist in presenting the ambitions and the future of the Port.

The joint workshop presented the different plans for economic and business development at the Port of Newhaven and in East Sussex County.

Also, on Monday 17th January, a one day seminar at the Brighton Thistle Hotel was held to find out how the development and the innovation of the Marine industry can get a challenging place in the development of the Port. The event was well attended by all sectors, public bodies, education and training providers, private companies, both exisiting and prospective in the area.

The event was opened by speeches from the Port Manager, Captain Francois Jean, ESCC Councillor Rupert Simmons and Government Transport Minister and MP for Lewes Distict, Mr Norman Baker.

The interesting speakers of the day engaged the attendees in the following subjects:-
The EC's policy support to the marine leisure and boatbuilding sector to stimulate EU competitiveness.
Foreign Direct Investment to support regional economic development.
The strategic factors of competitiveness and success.
The challenges and constraints for growth.
The need for research, development, creativity and innovation.
A case study of exisiting boat building operations in Newhaven.
How clusters can stimulate new investment and growth, focusing on inward investment, barriers to growth, diversification strategies and cross-border co-operation.
The importance of training/knowledge centres for the future of the industry.

The day concluded with a coach trip to Newhaven Fort, from where the whole layout of the port could be seen. The Harbour Master gave a talk on the history of the port and described the present day layout and opportunities. A tour of the fort and refreshments ended the day.

The PATCH project is an EU funded Interreg iv A 2seas project of maritime crossborder co-operation between the ports in the Channel area and the Southern North Sea aiming to focus on high value operations, fast track  investments,modernising the infrastructure and increasing the port's overall competitiveness to become more attractive for all users.
