Offshore Wind Turbines Print

Newhaven Port & Properties welcome the selection of E.on Climate & Renewables UK as the developer for the Hastings Zone 6 Windfarm site off the coast of Newhaven.

The Port is ideally placed to play a significant part in the development of this site, and will be looking to have early discussions with E.on about the services the port can provide.

Francois Jean, Port Manager said "This is exciting news to start the New Year. The Port is committed to being a Green Port and the project forms one of the elements of the Newhaven Port Masterplan. It is clear that if the Crown Estates are to achieve their goal of helping to provide a quarter of the UK's total electricity by 2020, everyone will have to work to a very tight timescale, which fits in with the Port's own Masterplan.

The recent weather has demonstrated only too clearly how essential it is that the Country diversifies it's energy supplies.

Whilst our core business is the reception of Continental ferry vessel traffic, the last two years in collaboration with London Central Government, MP Norman Baker, ESCC, LDC, NTC, SEEDA and private companies involved in the offshore wind industry, we were also sudying how embracing the rapidly developing environmental market by facilitating the development and maintenance of offshore wind turbines. With result that the Port of Newhaven has been flagged in the 2009 March report issued by the Department of Energy and Climate Change as the most suitable port for implementing such industry in the South East of England.

The Port Masterplan is in progress and the report of the Stakeholder Workshop Consultation with key interested parties on the Masterplan will be published later this month.

Last but not least, this is a real economical growth opportunity, not only for Newhaven but also for the whole of East Sussex."
